A holiday to grow fond of the island

On some mornings, Phú Quốc's blue sea is so lovely that a seat in a coastal cafe makes you want another drink and a longer stay. Sun brightens the sand, palms cast shade and water stretches to the horizon. Have breakfast, walk, stop somewhere beautiful and order more of a dish you like.

For three island days, this itinerary makes room for those pleasures: sea views to enjoy fully, memorable food, an afternoon for photographs and Phú Quốc stories to take home.

Day one: getting to know Dương Đông

Dương Đông is an approachable place to begin. Its river runs through neighbourhoods to the sea; a market stands along the bank and boats recall island fishing life. This everyday corner has an appeal of its own on an island known for beaches.

Spend the first afternoon nearby. Buy fruit at the market, browse stalls, find something you want to eat and head towards Dinh Cậu. Small discoveries quickly make a new place feel close. Finding a restaurant you enjoy is satisfying; recognising its turn next time is even better.

At Dinh Cậu, the sea opens before you. The shrine, rocks and old tree make a beautiful, distinctive setting. Look towards both sea and harbour: boats, water and rooftops show an island where people have lived and worked for generations, as well as a holiday destination.

Day one: afternoon light and dinner together

On clear days, late afternoon is worth waiting for. Light changes the water and the scenery around you. Find a seat together and watch; point out a lovely streak of light or keep the photograph where your companion smiles.

A good photograph holds scenery and the person's enjoyment. Take your time, change the angle, look again and try another shot. Ordinary moments can become delightful on holiday.

For dinner, choose a place serving what everyone wants. Freshly grilled squid (mực nướng), steamed fish (cá hấp), vegetables and soup invite a long shared meal. Squid brings aroma and a just-cooked bite; steamed fish (cá hấp) keeps sweetness, delicious with suitable fish sauce (nước mắm) and hot rice. Sometimes the extra order is the plate everyone has just finished.

After dinner, Dương Đông already has places you remember: the restaurant, the afternoon seat and the way to Dinh Cậu. That first-day feeling is lovely: you have just arrived and already something feels familiar.

Day two: a beautiful day in the south

After meeting the town, give the next day to the sea. Bãi Sao and An Thới can form a southern outing: sand in the morning, waterfront streets in the afternoon. Scenery changes between stages, with time to enjoy each.

Bãi Sao's beauty lies in curving white sand, palms and water. On bright days, lighter nearshore colour gives the sea depth. Your favourite detail may be small: shade on the sand, a bright patch of water or a companion turning to call you.

Walk a suitable stretch beside the water before choosing your seat. Feel the sand, follow the shoreline with your eyes and find a view you love. With a cold coconut in hand, the morning still has plenty of time.

Enjoy the sand, swim in locally advised areas or choose an activity currently provided. For kayak or SUP, check sea conditions and listen to guidance. Learning together adds pleasure: one person tries while the other watches, then exchanges places.

Make time simply to watch the sea too. Some want many photographs; others enjoy the water quietly. Both have reasons to love the morning. Room for those small preferences makes an outing comfortable.

At lunch, find somewhere serving near the beach and choose from the menu: grilled seafood (hải sản nướng), steamed fish (cá hấp) or a hot dish with rice. Rest after eating and change into dry clothes before continuing.

Afternoon: a walk along An Thới's waterfront

In Sunset Town, the sea appears between colourful buildings and Mediterranean-inspired streets. After sand and palms, walking here offers different pleasures: architecture, a lane opening towards water, an attractive cafe and more photographs.

Save time to sit. Order a drink, look through Bãi Sao pictures and choose one to send home. Looking up, you still see the sea, now framed by roofs and balconies. One direction can reveal wonderfully different sides of Phú Quốc.

When Sunset Town lights up

For Cầu Hôn or an evening show, choose your preferred experience and check the day's tickets and schedule. Dinner can be nearby, followed by the transport you arranged back to your accommodation.

Another option: the sea from a cable car

For elevated views and activities, Hòn Thơm is an alternative for the full middle day. The cable car from An Thới looks over sea and small islands; Hòn Thơm has Aquatopia and other activity areas. Give it the morning and part of the afternoon instead of Bãi Sao, then connect to An Thới according to the actual cable-car timetable.

The final morning: another island flavour

Make time for a dish you want to try on the final morning. Bun quay (bún quậy) is an engaging choice: hot rice noodles, shrimp, fish and squid, with a dipping sauce you mix to taste.

The pleasure comes from a comforting combination. Seafood sweetens the broth; pepper, chilli and calamansi add aroma, heat and acidity to the sauce. Taste the broth, dip a bite and adjust: more calamansi for acidity, chilli for heat. You gradually discover your preferred mixture.

Taste each other's dipping bowls for another small pleasure. The same noodles become different preferences. You might still be discussing the favourite mixture after eating and planning a slight change next time.

If time allows, a fish-sauce (nước mắm) producer welcoming visitors is worth considering. Large wooden vats connect anchovies and salt with fermentation and a familiar Vietnamese seasoning. Seeing the work makes questions about production and your bottle at home more specific.

Choose a small gift too: pepper, fish sauce (nước mắm) suitable for transport or something a relative requested. Buying where something is made adds pleasure and a story for the next time it is used.

Leave time to collect bags and reach the airport for your flight. On the way, browse photographs: Bãi Sao, Dinh Cậu's afternoon, an An Thới street and a meal everyone loved.

Send a few favourites home and save the rest for the evening. One lovely picture may recall the meal nearby and another story from that afternoon. Phú Quốc now holds moments that belong to your own trip.
