Its back to the mountain, its face to the sea
Chùa Hộ Quốc rests against Đang Cưu mountain and faces the East Sea. People use the phrase "tựa sơn hướng hải", leaning on the mountain and facing the sea, to describe this setting: the steadiness of the mountain, the openness of the sea. The road to the pagoda runs between mountain and sea, and around one bend you come upon a statue of Quan Âm (Guanyin) more than 30 metres tall.
A name that is a wish
According to the Venerable Thích Thông Kiên, the pagoda's abbot, "Hộ Quốc" means protecting the nation and guarding its borders, especially the seas and islands of the southwest. The name carries a wish for calm seas, a well-fed people and the lasting endurance of the nation's seas and islands. The people of Phú Quốc come to the pagoda at the start of the year, before heading out to sea, and on Buddha's Birthday (Phật đản) and Vu Lan to pray for favourable rain and wind.
From the Tam quan gate to the main hall
The Tam quan gate has three tiers of curved roofs and three entrances, named Địa Giác, Bát Nhã and Giải Thoát. From there, seventy stone steps lead up to the main hall, flanked by golden dragon-and-lotus reliefs and a pair of stone dragons, symbolising the protection of the true Dharma.
In the Thiên Tỉnh courtyard, a marble statue of Shakyamuni Buddha nearly three metres tall sits in meditation beneath a bodhi tree. The Tam Bảo hall honours the Buddha, the Bodhisattvas and the Dharma Protectors. The Patriarchs' Hall behind the main hall honours the Three Patriarchs of Trúc Lâm: Trần Nhân Tông, Pháp Loa and Huyền Quang. On either side of the courtyard stand a wooden bell tower and drum tower, with massive ironwood pillars and beams, in the spirit of Lý–Trần architecture.

The first Trúc Lâm pagoda on the island
Construction began in 2011 and the pagoda was inaugurated at the end of 2012. It is the first pagoda of the Trúc Lâm Yên Tử Zen school on Phú Quốc, set within a spiritual tourism complex of about 110 ha; the pagoda grounds alone cover nearly 12 ha.
Quick answers before you go
Is there an entrance fee?
There is no ticket to enter the pagoda; visitors give whatever donation they wish.
What time and which days should I go?
The pagoda is open from early morning until about six in the evening. On full-moon days, festivals and Tết it is busier with Buddhist worshippers, so if you prefer quiet, come on an ordinary day. Go early or in the late afternoon to avoid the worst of the sun.
What should I wear, and how should I behave?
Dress modestly, speak quietly, take off your hat when entering the main hall and ask before taking photos in the worship areas.
