Two explanations for the name

There are two explanations for the name Suối Tranh. The first says the poet Đông Hồ once stopped beside this stream, and his inspiration gave it its name: a stream as lovely as a painting (tranh). The second is more down to earth: many stretches of the stream run through clumps of cogon grass (cỏ tranh), so the locals named it that way. On one side, painting; on the other, the grass along the bank.

A stream from the Hàm Ninh mountains

The stream rises in the Hàm Ninh range, in the northeast of the island, about ten kilometres from Dương Đông. Water from many mountain clefts flows into the main channel. In places the stream runs gently over flat ground; in others it breaks into waterfalls, including one nearly five metres high. The stream lies almost entirely within the forest, with stretches so thickly covered by forest vines that the sun cannot get through. The water is crystal clear and cooler than the sea, rivers or ponds; the falls are at their most beautiful in the rainy season, and the water is fullest from about June to January of the following year.

Hang Dơi

Near the path to the stream is Hang Dơi (Bat Cave), halfway up the mountain at a height of about 200 metres and some 50 metres deep, with stalactites inside. In the dry season, sunlight shining through the cave mouth creates a light all its own.

How to enjoy the stream

At Suối Tranh you can bathe in the stream, walk beneath small waterfalls, rest on flat rocks, have a light snack in the forest, listen to birdsong and breathe in the scent of wild orchids. The stream has many rapids and boulders that shelter it, so children and non-swimmers can still bathe in the shallow spots. Older visitors can keep to the lower stretches, while younger ones can climb further to see the falls.

Quick answers before you go

Where is the stream, and how do I get there?

The tourist area is in Suối Mây hamlet, about ten kilometres from central Dương Đông, and welcomes visitors all year round.

Is there an entrance fee?

The entrance fee is low and changes over time, so ask at the counter; parking is charged separately.

What should I prepare?

The path in has rocks and steps and gets slippery in the rainy season, so choose shoes with good grip. After heavy rain the water can run faster than usual; if it looks muddy and strong, admire it from the bank instead of going in.
