Sitting on the hill, all of Dương Đông at your feet

Chuồn Chuồn Bistro & Skybar sits on top of Sao Mai Hill, right next to the centre of Dương Đông. From the open-air terrace you look down on the rooftops of the ward, out to the west coast and the mountain range behind. The bar describes itself in just those terms: a hilltop bistro and skybar overlooking the sea, the mountains and Dương Đông town, with breathtaking views from the open-air terrace.

Because Dương Đông is on the island's west coast, the sun sets straight into the sea in front of you. That is why people climb the slope up here in the late afternoon: to sit and watch the sunset pour its colour over the water, then wait for the town below to light up.

Coffee in the morning, bistro in the afternoon, skybar at night

Chuồn Chuồn changes pace through the day. Morning is a quiet café among greenery and birdsong. Afternoon is a small restaurant. As evening comes, the lights and music go up and the bar becomes a skybar. At weekends there is live music.

The kitchen combines international and Vietnamese dishes, as the bar puts it, along with "artsy cocktails" and cappuccino. The menu has nearly a hundred dishes: bánh mì chảo, bún, hủ tiếu and seafood for a Vietnamese-style meal; pasta, steak, salads and desserts for a European-style meal; and vegetarian dishes too. The bar has more than fifty drinks, from draught beer, classic cocktails and the bar's own cocktails to spirits by the glass or the bottle. The drinks with the bar's own names are Honey Lemongrass, Tropical Highland, Summer Hill and Coco-Ffee.

Wood, bamboo and one big tree

The bar is built around one big tree, whose canopy shades the seats beneath and keeps them cool in the breeze. The materials are mainly wood, stone and bamboo. Seating is divided into garden, balcony and terrace; there are rows of seats tucked among the canopy, a wooden bridge facing the sea, and a sun-catching terrace.

The indoor room has a woven bamboo ceiling over timber beams, low-hanging round bulbs, a black-and-white patterned tile floor, wooden tables and woven chairs. On the white brick wall hangs a map of Phú Quốc island. At the end of the room is a long wooden bar, a shelf of spirits behind it and the word "BAR" in neon. Outside on the terrace, the bar's name is written in yellow neon lettering along the railing, lighting up as the sky turns orange.
