A garden in the middle of Grand World

Grand World is the heart of Phú Quốc United Center, a complex of more than one thousand hectares at Bãi Dài in the north of the island, opened on 21 April 2021. Grand World alone covers 85 hectares, with rows of European-style painted streets, a Venice canal with gondolas, and shows that run late into the night.

Among those streets is a garden with a rhythm quite different from its surroundings: the Contemporary Art Park (Công viên Nghệ thuật đương đại), known in English as Urban Park. Here contemporary art blends into the nature of Pearl Island (đảo Ngọc). Statues stand in pools of water, rise from the lawn and tuck in beside the paths among rows of trees. The park’s design was advised by IRMS, a company that has contributed to many world-famous entertainment projects such as Universal Studios and Genting.

Works that came to Việt Nam for the first time

The park brings together dozens of works, many of them appearing in Việt Nam for the first time: Water Hair (Mái tóc nước), Mother Earth (Mẹ Trái Đất), Life Bursts Forth (Cuộc sống bùng nổ), Child of the Earth (Đứa con của Trái Đất), Creatures of the Tree (Sinh vật của cây). Their names already state the shared theme: earth, water, trees and people.

Walk a circuit and you will meet the face of a woman with closed eyes emerging from a large block of stone, water falling down both sides in small cascades. A little further on, a giant head rises from a grassy mound, two hands gripping the edge of the ground as if it has just climbed out of the earth. Three women in leaf skirts dance together in a fountain pool, an old tree stump has human figures reaching out from its trunk, and two slender bronze figures reach their hands toward each other across a lake. Most of the works are set beside water, so the sound of running water follows you along the whole path.

Up the flower-shaped observation tower

The park’s highest point is the Observation Tower, two storeys and 12 metres high, shaped like a large flower. The way into the tower crosses a suspension bridge. You can climb the stairs or take the lift up.

From here you can see the whole sculpture garden, the streets of Grand World, and beyond them Phú Quốc National Park and the beaches. On clear days, in golden sunlight, is when the view is at its best. The second floor has a café serving afternoon tea, enough to sit for a while before going down into the garden.

When Grand World lights up

The park lies right beside Bamboo Legend, the bamboo building by architect Võ Trọng Nghĩa, so from many angles in the garden you will see that bamboo frame as a backdrop to the statues. When it gets dark, the paths and lawns light up, and the statues appear in a look quite different from the daytime.

Beyond the garden are the other attractions of Grand World: the Venice canal, the Teddy Bear Museum, and the evening shows. Quintessence of Vietnam (Tinh hoa Việt Nam) runs from 20:15 to 21:00, lantern release from 21:00 to 21:10, Colours of Venice (Sắc màu Venice) on the canal from 21:30 to 22:00, and the laser show at 22:45. Visiting the sculpture garden in the afternoon and staying on for the shows is a complete way to spend an evening at Grand World.
