A curved bay that keeps the look of the old west coast

Vũng Bầu is a long bay, curved like a crescent, on the northwest shore of Phú Quốc, lying between Bãi Dài to the north and Cửa Cạn to the south. The sand is golden and fine, and the beach slopes gently into the water. Behind the beach is thick forest. Along the edge of the sand runs a row of casuarinas, some with roots left bare as the waves eat into the shore. The water in the bay is jade green.

The beach faces west, so on any clear evening the sun sets straight into the sea in front of you.

While most of Phú Quốc's west coast has become resorts, amusement parks and night-time strips, Vũng Bầu still keeps the look of the coast as it used to be: few buildings, a lot of forest, few people. That is why people are willing to go a little farther along a dirt road to get here.

Forest, river and resorts tucked beside the beach

At Vũng Bầu the forest runs right down to the sand, and a small river flows into the sea just beside the beach. In June 2017, Fusion Resort Phu Quoc opened amid all three: 97 villas with private pools, the sea on one side, the river and forest on the other, and a bar on the sand for watching the sunset.

Along the beach there are also small resorts of the bungalow type. Mai Phương is a family resort right on the sand, with a pool. Vung Bau Resort has villas, a restaurant and a quiet stretch of beach of its own. At the northern end of the bay, Nam Nghi resort has a bar built on a small rocky island, reached by boat; outside guests can go too.

From forest to sea: Vũng Bầu golf course

Right beside Vũng Bầu beach is Eschuri Vung Bau Golf, an 18-hole course designed and built by Sun Group and IMG, 7,508 yards long on more than 65 hectares. The course follows the terrain of the place exactly: the first nine holes lie in the forest, with the old trees around the holes left standing; the back nine come out to the white sand beach, the trees thinning, the fairways opening out along the shore.

The 14th hole looks straight out to sea. Anyone playing late in the afternoon, from five to six o'clock, will see the sun set over the bay.

A beach nobody has tidied

Vũng Bầu is quiet because there is not much here yet. On the beach there are no restaurants, no beach clubs, and no cleaning crew on the empty stretches. Rubbish washes in from the sea, most of all after storms. The water's edge has rock in places, and there are sea urchins.

The road to the beach is changing too. The last part is red dirt road, full of potholes and slippery after rain. In 2026, several visitors reported being asked by guards to turn back at the golf course and at a construction site, and an old dirt track is having a barrier gate put across it. The Google Maps pin in this area cannot be trusted; people have followed it to a closed gate.

Quick answers before you go

How long does it take to get to Vũng Bầu from Dương Đông?

About 20 km to the north in the direction of Cửa Cạn, roughly 35 to 45 minutes by vehicle; from the airport about 50 minutes. The part near the beach is small road, red dirt road and hidden turns, so ride slowly and go while it is still light. There are few petrol stations in the north of the island, so fill the tank before you go.

Can I just walk down to the beach?

Not every stretch can be entered: some have a gate and guards. The surest way is to stay, or stop for a meal, at a resort on the beach. If you are turned back, Bãi Dài just to the north has a public way down to the sea at Grand World.

Which season is best?

From November to April the sea is calm and the water clear. From May to October is the Southwest monsoon season, with some days of big waves, and you should not go in to swim.

What should I bring?

Drinking water, food, sunscreen and a hat, because there are no shops on the beach. Add water shoes if you want to wade out, since the water's edge has rocks and sea urchins. Bring a bag to take your rubbish back.
